Back in the dark, dark days of the 1990’s, Funky Junk were banging the ribbon drum, despite the fact that these humble mics were less fashionable than flared trousers. After all, ribbons move in three dimensions and capture nuances that condensers and dynamics miss. With their soft high end roll-off and full, warm sound, ribbons are perfect for capturing acoustic sounds, and are particularly suited to any instrument with a propensity for harshness or brightness at the top end (such as pianos, brass or drum overheads where they tame cymbal splash and tizz).
By coincidence we came across a group of kindred spirits in LA, and so started our longstanding relationship with the fellow believers at Royer Mics.
Before we even tried their sexy little R-121 ribbon, we were taken with the enthusiasm and honesty of the company, as typified by the irrepressible mic fanatic and ribbon missionary, sales director John Jennings. It therefore came as a relief to find that the mics lived up to their hype. At last, here was a company that understood microphones and in particular realised that ribbon mics had a permanent place in the mic cupboard.
Since then, Royer have gone from strength to strength and are now established as one of the leading mic manufacturers in the world. We’ve sold literally hundreds, from small beginnings where word of mouth and demos always bought an enthusiastic response followed by sales (an early happy customer was the BBC who now sling stereo SF12’s above the orchestra as part of The Proms recording rig).
There are few professional recordists out there who don’t own or haven’t used one or a pair of the ubiquitous R-121’s, and matched pairs remain top sellers to this day. However, the company is progressive and in striving to develop the range has introduced active versions of both the mono (the R-122) and stereo (SF24). These have a more open, fuller sound due to the larger transformers and high quality inbuilt preamps, negating the need for premium quality preamps.
The latest addition to the range is the R-122V, an active tube version of the R-122, offering the warmth associated with the best tube mics in conjunction with the open, honest sound of a ribbon.
