There is much written here and elsewhere about the legendary COLES ribbon microphones, particularly the superb 4038 ‘soap dish’. Coles have been making microphones for more than fifty years – originally the company was called STC – and the classic designs have changed little over the years.
Funky Junk began to promote them twenty years ago in an age when the recording world had largely turned its back on ribbon mics. My passion for ribbons helped establish Royer as a mainstream microphone brand and also bring Coles back from the wilderness – at one stage we were selling more than 70% of all 4038s sold in the UK. Traditional, reliable and un-gimmicky, Coles microphones are probably used on 90% of pop, rock, jazz and classical recordings these days. A true classic.
