Converter technology has forged forwards in leaps and bounds over the past few years as digital edges ever closer to analogue in definition and audio quality. It ain’t there yet and some dinosaurs (like me) are convinced that digiblah will never go the final yard, but what is beyond dispute is that for convenience, cost of media and creativity, digital recording rules the roost.
Just as good monitors are essential for hearing what goes down and a decent mic pre is a prerequisite for tracking, good quality converters are increasingly seen as an essential rather than a luxury. Fortunately, prices are falling in tandem with rising quality to the point where 32 channels of fully blown 24 bit/96kHz A/D and D/A conversion from mid price market leaders Lynx would cost half the price of anything offering equivalent quality a year ago.
The market is bristling with companies offering quality converters such as Lavry, Digital Audio Denmark, Mytec and others. We can supply any and all of these brands, and more, but have tried to concentrate on those units that we know, that we trust and which have efficient service support in the UK.
We’ve geared our demo room to offer the best A/B comparison between different converters. The acoustics have been painstakingly tuned to offer the flattest possible response, the monitoring is accurate and detailed and we have a variety of digital formats available so clients can bring their own files or media and compare the results through a variety of converters. And we’re not audio snobs – we rate some of the lower end converters very highly and recommend them in many situations where they balance the rest of your rig.
So give us a call and book a demo. We don’t have every converter in the world as yet, but we’re working on it…
