2007 TOP TEN SELLERS
1. Royer ribbon mics. more info
The superb Royer mics go from strength to strength with active R-122 matched pairs leading the way. Growing sales reflect our policy of reducing prices in line with the falling value of the dollar.
2. APS active monitors. more info
In a crowded active monitor market, we were sceptical of a place for yet another brand but have been proved wrong in no uncertain terms. Our enthusiasm for these superb Polish made speakers has been echoed by virtually all who’ve heard them, with the result that at present demand outstrips supply. We’re bracing ourselves for a price rise in the New Year – hardly surprising as APS outperform better known monitors at up to three times the price. Look out for the new APS nearfield actives in the coming months. At last a monitor that promises to replace the much loved Yamaha NS10’s.
3. Coles 4038 ribbon mics. more info
Funky Junk has sold up to 90% of UK supplies of 4038’s, and these remain one of our favourite mics. Superb for strings, brass, pianos and overheads, more and more musicians and engineers are realising why the 4038 has been the first choice for classical and acoustic recordists worldwide for decades. As with APS, demand currently outstrips supply, but we always have singles and pairs in stock.
4. GML8200 eq more info
George Massenberg is one of our favourite people, as well as being a legend both as an equipment designer and recording engineer. This year we’ve been proud to have sold more GML equipment than any other dealers in the UK, not merely because we’ve reduced prices in line with the falling US dollar.
5. Midas Venice mixing desk. more info
We’ve been won over by these unpretentious small consoles as have dozens of happy clients. Although they may not look like the sexiest small desks on the market, they outperform all other contenders easily. Decent mic preamps, extremely useable four band eq, six aux’s and well designed metering, speaker select and fx returns make the Venice our small desk of choice and that of an increasing number of satisfied clients.
6. Chandler TG1 compressors. more info
2007 was a bumper year for Funky Junk and Chandler, with the Germanium units proving a huge hit. It is still the EMI/Abbey Road endorsed TG1 dual/stereo compressor that leads the field, however. And with a recent price drop, 2008 promises to be another successful year.
7. Beyer Microphones. more info
We like to carry the Beyer range in stock, but the M160 ribbons in particular tend to sell our as fast as they arrive. A pleasant discovery this year was the MC930, a high quality, modestly priced pencil condenser which has proved particularly popular for acoustic guitar. Unsung heroes for far too long, it seems that Beyer are finally getting the credit they deserve.
8. Bricasti Reverb more info
We’re a tough sell for any distributor promoting a new product. Indeed, we positively drip cynicism and justifiably so, as far too much second rate equipment has hit the market this year supported by ridiculous reviews and claims. The Bricasti won us over in no uncertain terms, however, and we’ve waxed lyrical since our first demo unit arrived. Units remain in short supply, however, and all have been allocated prior to arrival. We hope to have more stock in January, but check one out quickly as they don’t hang about.
9. Tubetech SCM2B more info
This multiband compressor has proved the star performer in the excellent Tubetech range. For those unfamiliar with multiband compression, the advantages as immediately obvious as the degree of control afforded over different frequency bands make mixing and mastering easy. Definitely worth a listen.
10. Alan Smart C1 and C2. more info
For those wanting fast, funky, in-yer-face mixes, the Al Smart is the only obvious answer. We’re amazed at how many of these come and go, quietly performing for a variety of pro clients day in, day out. Another unsung hero. Try it on a mix and you’ll be convinced you’ve found the missing link.
